Late-night bus service for partygoers in Newquay has been praised for helping to contribute to a reduction in reports of antisocial behaviour (ASB) and sexual offences to the police.

This year the night bus, which operated from 24 May to 6 September, saw over 740 people use the Saturday-service to get home safely.

It was introduced to help tackle drink driving offences, as well as ASB and violence against women and girls.

In the months the bus was operational, police saw a 50% reduction in public order and sexual offences reported in Newquay.

PS Dave Flynn said: “It is fantastic to see these reductions in reported crime and that the night bus has been a contributing factor in helping to make the nightlife in Newquay safer.

“I’m pleased that so many people were able to make use of the service and that it was able to prevent, deter and reduce crime. Thank you to the OPCC and our partners for their support.”

Inspector Steve Johnson, who heads up the neighbourhood police teams in the area, said: “The bus has been a great addition to the busy weekends in Newquay over Summer, complimenting the high-visibility patrols our officers carry out at peak times to deter opportunist offenders whilst also providing a reassurance to those enjoying their night out.

“It’s encouraging to see that all of these factors have contributed to the reduction in reports.”

The service in Newquay was set up by Devon & Cornwall Police and funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, with support from Cornwall Council, Cornwall Air Ambulance and Newquay BID. The service was provided by First Bus.

Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez said: “The reason my office funds the night buses is to achieve greater safety and a reduction in ASB. To achieve this level of success already is exactly what our community needs to hear.

“Enjoying a night out shouldn’t come at a cost of being a victim or witness of crime or disorder. We all want a safe and thriving evening and night time economy.”

The night bus has run successfully in Newquay for two years.
