Two closure orders put a stop to antisocial behaviour, Torpoint

Two residential addresses related to people responsible for causing relentless antisocial behaviour (ASB) have been served with closure orders to prevent further disruptions to peace in the local area.

Both properties located on Harvey Street, Torpoint, will be shut to all visitors for three months. A full closure order at one of the addresses also means it’s now illegal for the tenant to enter.

This preventative action follows reports from the community about repeated disorderly incidents, including antisocial behaviour, visitors and noise disturbances at all hours of the night, including suspected dealing and use of drugs.

PC Gething who supported the investigation said: “These premises were associated with persistent crime and disorder. It was important for us to put a stop to this behaviour to protect the community.

“The decision to apply for closure orders is not one we make lightly.

“Initially, we always attempt to work with tenants to deter ASB from happening in the first place, giving them warnings and presenting opportunities to help steer them away from illegal activity.

“However, in this case, the closure orders were the next necessary step to safeguard local people as this ASB was having a significant and detrimental impact on residents.

"We will continue to work with local people and partner agencies to tackle any further concerns and put a stop to unacceptable behaviour in Torpoint.”

The orders were granted at Cornwall Magistrates Court on Monday 13 January – with one address receiving a partial closure order and the second a full closure order. Both will be in place for three months.

Inspector Jamie Musgrove said: “This result was made possible because of the reports we received from the community. Thank you to everyone who came forward with information – we’re listening and taking action.

“Closure orders are just one of our approaches to tackle ASB. Our neighbourhood teams continue to carry out high visibility patrols, run targeted operations and conduct investigations to put prolific offenders before the courts.”
