Police funding has helped a new skate park in South Molton get off the ground so youngsters and other age groups in the area have somewhere new to enjoy.

The new venue officially opened in late July and is situated on an old industrial site in East Street. Previously skaters were only holding sessions at the local pannier market.

Devon & Cornwall Police Youth Intervention Officer Adam Sinclair attended the launch event at the Skate Molton site a few weeks ago to see for himself what a great facility the park is and how the funding has been spent.

The project received £2,369 from the Force to cover the costs of furniture and games, as well as the necessary health and safety training. The club also received support from other organisations in the area.

Neighbourhood Team Leader Sergeant Rob Brown said: “This skate park gives local youngsters in particular a great way to learn new skills and make friends. The fantastic volunteers who help at the venue are passionate and want the best for those people who go along.

“Skate Molton have been a real asset to South Molton and has helped to reduce anti-social behaviour within the community and provide children of all ages a safe place to go where they are mentored and supported by a great team of staff. It’s been very positive to see the team take Skate Molton to new levels and we are excited about their new building and what the future holds for them.”

“My officers aim to visit the skate park on a regular basis so young people there can discuss any issues or questions they may have. The staff have kindly offered us the use of the meeting room and we want to encourage young people to come and talk to us. “

Police in North, East & West Devon, as well as Mid Devon and Exeter handed over around £20,000 to good causes in the community last year 2023/24. The funds were available via the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) which is cash and assets seized from convicted criminals.

Skate Molton CIC is a Community Interest Company and has members of various ages across different decades. Members will be taking part in the skate and Bmx jam event at Rock Park, Barnstaple on Sunday 8 September from 11am-5pm which will feature live DJs and a Parkour demo.
