‘Keeping roads safe remains our focus’: police in Cornwall reassure public as summer approaches
Police in Cornwall are carrying out visible patrols and targeted operations across key routes as part of their commitment to tackle dangerous driving and those who use road networks for criminality throughout summer.
Specialist roads policing officers are using a number of high-visibility and undercover tactics to keep road users safe as Cornwall sees an increase in holiday makers using its roads to travel.
Their focus is on identifying drivers exhibiting dangerous behaviours known for causing the most collisions in the UK and stopping vehicles that have links to crime, such as drug supply.
Two recent days of action saw four arrests for suspected drug driving, two vehicles seized, two people using mobile phones behind the wheel, two people driving without wearing a seatbelt, two people driving without MOT, three people driving without insurance and one licence surrendered due to eye sight test failure.
Drivers have been reported and penalties will be issued where appropriate, including points on licenses and fines.
“Keeping the roads safe remains our focus,” said Operations Commander Jim Gale. “These operations are hugely important for us to make sure we’re doing our part in keeping people safe on the road.
“Our priority is to deter dangerous behaviour, educate drivers, and identify those breaking the law in an effort to create positive, safe, sustainable change.”
Addressing careless drivers and criminals directly, Inspector Tony Hannaford, who heads up roads policing teams in West Cornwall said: “We’ll be on the roads looking out for you, whether you know we’re there or not, to put a stop to your dangerous behaviour.
“This action isn’t a one-off. Our officers are on the roads 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will continue to be throughout the year."
In a message to the wider public, Insp Hannaford added: “We look forward to welcoming lots of visitors to our towns. Don’t forget, if you’re driving, please pre-plan your journeys, take breaks and drive safely and considerately.”
The ‘Fatal Five’ are contributory factors that cause serious road traffic collisions. This includes drink/drug driving, failing to wear seatbelts, using mobile phones (and other in-car distractions), health and fitness to drive and speeding.
Drivers who commit offences could receive a fine and points on their licence, a court appearance and even imprisonment for more serious offences.
If you are concerned about speeding in your area, or you would like to share information about a suspected road traffic offence to the police, please report it online here. If a crime is in progress always call 999.
