Paignton roads kept safer thanks to extra patrols and vehicle seizures
Police in Paignton have thanked law abiding motorists as they carry out extra high visibility patrols along the Esplanade and in Roundham.
A large number of drivers have been spoken to by officers and are enjoying the area responsibly; unfortunately a minority have been causing anti-social behaviour.
During the last week five vehicles have been seized across the town to help keep roads safer. Several Section 59 warning notices have been issued to motorists for anti-social use of vehicles.
Paignton Sector Inspector Pete Giesens explained: “We know there can sometimes be a perception that we are out to ‘catch’ motorists out but that’s simply not the case. The vast majority of drivers and riders have nothing to worry about. Our focus is on the small minority whose anti-social driving causes disruption, noise and concern for local residents, businesses and visitors.
“We are committed to keeping Paignton a safe and enjoyable place for everyone. So, if you’re driving or riding responsibly, you’ll probably just get a friendly wave from us. If you’re treating the Esplanade like your own race track you might get a little more than that.
“We will continue our patrols over the coming weeks to provide reassurance to everyone in our community so please enjoy the local area responsibly and help us look after our beautiful seafront.
“We would also like to remind motorists that the seafront noise camera is in operation and activations recorded will be followed up.
“Thank you to everyone who continues to report information to us, your support helps us tackle crime, protect our communities and make Paignton a safer place.”
A Section 59 notice is an official warning given by police to drivers whose vehicles are used in a way that causes alarm, distress, or annoyance to the public, or is driven carelessly or inconsiderately.
The notice allows police to seize an individual’s vehicle if they are found driving it anti-socially again within a 12 month period.
