Devon & Cornwall Police recently ran a road safety operation to target dangerous driving in Truro, resulting in arrests for drink driving and patrols to deter antisocial vehicle use.

The activity took place on Friday 30 May across Truro, Tregony and Perranporth. Officers were deployed in marked and unmarked cars, using a number of specialist tactics to target careless drivers and those breaking the law.

It also saw a team of officers carrying out high visibility patrols to deter people from using vehicles antisocially. This followed reports from the community about antisocial use of motorcycles in Hendra and cars in Malpas, Newham and Threemilestone.

Their focus was to identify those purposely making loud noise from engines or from music, and individuals driving recklessly.

During the day of action, police pulled over drivers to carry out roadside checks, including breathalysers and drug swipes. This led to two arrests for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol and one arrest for driving whilst being banned. Three people were also found to be driving without insurance and another for driving at excess speed.

Drivers have been reported and penalties will be issued where appropriate, including speed awareness courses, points on licenses and fines.

Police Sergeant Dave Pearce, who supported with the operation, said: "We know that dangerous driving is a concern for our communities, especially because of how busy the roads can get throughout the summer months.

“Carrying out activity like this key in tackling careless driving and those who drive without any consideration for the safety of other road users.

“I’d like to reassure people who live, work or plan to holiday in Cornwall, that our officers will continue to be on the roads as we head into summer. We will be working to keep you safe and remove dangerous drivers from the roads.

PS Pearce added: “There is no excuse for committing these offences and taking risks when driving. Your choices can have huge consequences – please always consider the safety of others.”

This activity was carried out by Truro Neighbourhood Police team, the No Excuses Traffic team and the Neighbourhood Support team. It forms part of a wider approach to tackle dangerous driving and make roads safer for everyone across Devon and Cornwall.
