UPDATE | Removal of face coverings, Exeter
We can confirm that a Section 60AA order has been introduced in Exeter city centre today (Saturday 22 November).
The order will give officers additional powers to require the removal of face coverings or any other item which is being used for the purpose of concealing someone’s identity.
The order runs from 10am to 6pm and will apply to area already designated under the Public Spaces Protection Order which encompasses the city centre.
Extra officers will be in the area throughout this period to provide a visible presence.
These powers may be used by officers involved in today's protests as part of our overall aim of facilitating peaceful protest whilst preventing crime and disorder and balancing the rights of others.
We are engaged with the organisers of both marches, and officers will be deployed throughout the city to reassure local residents, shoppers, and businesses. This will continue throughout the day.
UPDATE:
Our officers attended two marches in Exeter today, Saturday 22 November.
Prior to the event, officers liaised with organisers, local partners and businesses to ensure people could exercise their right to protest peacefully while minimising the impact on others.
Whilst no-one was taken into custody from the protests, officers did help make two arrests for unrelated matters.
As a force we will facilitate people’s right to protest peacefully, but any disorder will not be tolerated, nor will we facilitate any activity that places protestors, the public or officers at risk.
