Pensioner jailed for 22 years for rape and sexual abuse of children

A pensioner will likely die in prison after being jailed for 22 years for the rape and sexual abuse of two children.

Francis Wells, 81, of Barnoldswick in Lancashire, appeared at Truro Crown Court on Tuesday 7 April for sentencing having been convicted of two rapes of a child, two indecent assaults and two indecency with a child charges.

The court heard how the abuse took place mainly in Millbrook in the 1980s and 1990s and often included threats not to speak out.

Wells groomed his victims prior to the abuse with the offences having a significant and prolonged psychological effect on the two victims.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Simon Carr described the abuse as “brutal” adding that the effect has been “devastating” and affected every aspect of the victim’s lives.

Judge Carr also commented on the courage of the victims and Wells’ lack of remorse.

Officer in the case, Police Staff Investigator Jo Wilson said: “I would like to commend the victims in this case who were so brave in coming forward in the beginning and who then have continued to support the Police during what became a lengthy investigation.

“Due to their courage in giving evidence, justice has truly been served culminating in the Judge passing a sentence that will, in all likelihood, mean the offender will never leave prison again.

“I would like to reassure victims of historic abuse that you will be listened to, and we will do all we can to investigate and help and support you moving forward.”
