Police colleagues take on challenging Welsh peaks climb for charity
Police colleagues who work in North and West Devon have taken on an amazing challenge for good causes and gained a few blisters along the way.
A group of 21 police officers and staff attempted the 15 peaks challenge earlier this week to climb the highest peaks in Wales in less than 24hrs. This feat amounts to 37.5 miles and 15,000ft of climbing across super challenging terrain. The team took part in their own time while off duty.
It is one of the toughest mountain challenges in the UK and to complete it in 24 hours involved walking overnight and scrambling up some of the more exposed peaks. Unfortunately the group had to miss out one peak but managed to scale the other 14.
Superintendent Toby Davies took part in the fabulous challenge this time and also completed the same challenge 18 years ago.
Supt Davies explained: “This was such a hard challenge, physically draining and not helped by the atrocious weather conditions. The team showed amazing resilience and we were grateful for our wonderful support team, who made it possible. We can barely stand now but we’re so chuffed that we have been able to raise so much money for the good causes. Our thanks go to everyone who has donated so far.”
Due to bad weather conditions the team had to bypass one ridge peak adding four miles to the journey. The weather was unkind with strong winds, mist, rain and even sleet on Mount Snowdon. Most of the team completed the challenge in 22hrs and 20mins.
Supt Davies continued: “Sadly some of the team members had to drop out of the challenge but no one completed less than 27 miles and the fantastic team have so far raised an amazing £4,500 for North Devon Hospice and the National Foundation of Retired Service Animals.”
North Devon Hospice, based in Deer Park, Barnstaple, helps people in the area with terminal illness and palliative home care. The National Foundation of Retired Service Animals (NFRSA) supports the medical costs of retired emergency service animals such as police dogs and horses.
Becky Brennan, one of the Community Fundraisers for North Devon Hospice, added: “The funds raised by the intrepid explorers will help patients and families being cared for by North Devon Hospice, as they face a life-limiting illness like cancer. We were blown away by the courage and commitment of this awesome team – they kept on trekking despite the tough terrain and really challenging weather.
“Everyone at the hospice is so proud of them and the funds they have raised will make a real difference to local people. The money will help North Devon Hospice be there every step of the way, supporting families through the very toughest times. Thanks to this amazing team, we can be a shelter in the storm when it matters most.”
