Roadside fly-tip highlights the need to legally dispose of waste
An unsightly fly-tip sprung up in Tavistock this week to shine a spotlight on the serious harm caused by illegal dumping and to show how easily it can be reported.
Devon and Cornwall Police and West Devon Borough Council staged a realistic fly tip at Anderton Lay-by on the A386, Tavistock yesterday, Tuesday 14 October.
This innovative event was used as a tactic to engage with members of the public about the importance of reporting incidents of fly-tipping as well as provide education around the environmental, social, and financial damage caused by fly tipping.
The staged fly tip featured items commonly found dumped illegally, such as white goods and furniture. Officers and partners were on hand to talk to the public about the impact of fly tipping, the importance of using licensed waste carriers, and the correct ways to dispose of all types of waste—including bulky items.
Rural Affairs officer, PC Julian Fry, said: “Fly tipping causes significant damage to the environment and wildlife, and we know it is an issue for people in West Devon. This event is an opportunity shows the public what illegal fly tipping looks like so we can have constructive conversations about how to report if you see one.
“Anyone with information about those responsible should contact their local authority, and for large-scale incidents, the Environment Agency. If you see a crime in progress or waste causing an obstruction on a road, call 999.”
The Council’s commitment to reduce waste crimes such as fly tipping is part of its overarching strategy to keep West Devon as a great place to live in and visit.
Cllr Adam Bridgewater, Lead Member for Neighbourhood Services at West Devon Borough Council, said: “Fly tipping is a blight on our beautiful countryside and places an unfair burden on local taxpayers and landowners. We are committed to tackling this issue head-on, working with our partners and the community to raise awareness and take enforcement action where necessary.
“I would urge everyone to dispose of their waste responsibly as we will pursue people who illegally dump their rubbish - as a fly-tipping incident earlier this year at Trowelsworthy Carpark near Cadover Bridge demonstrates when we issued a Fixed Penalty Notice.
“Please also report any incidents of fly tipping you witness. If we work together, we can keep West Devon clean and safe for all.”
Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of waste and is a criminal offence. It can result in fines of up to £50,000 in Magistrates’ Courts, unlimited fines in higher courts, and even prison sentences.
