Police in Falmouth seize Surron style illegal e-motorbikes

Three illegal Surron-style electric motorbikes have been seized by police following an operation to keep the roads safe.

Officers from the Falmouth and Helston Neighbourhood Police Team took action as Surron and similar high-powered electric motorbikes become increasingly popular.

Many riders are unaware, or choose to ignore, that electric motorbikes are not automatically legal to ride on UK public roads. No electric motorbike or e-bike should ever be ridden on pavements.

To be used legally on a public road, a Surron-style electric motorbike must:

  • Be registered with the DVLA
  • Display a valid number plate
  • Be taxed (where required)
  • Have valid motor insurance
  • Hold an MOT if applicable
  • Be ridden by someone with the correct driving licence entitlement
  • Be fitted with the required road-legal equipment (such as lights and indicators)
  • Be ridden while wearing an approved motorcycle helmet

Many electric motorbikes do not meet these requirements and are therefore classed as illegal motor vehicles when ridden on public roads or in public places. They can only be used lawfully on private land with the permission of the landowner.

Neighbourhood Team Leader Sergeant Chris Vincent explained: “The illegal use of these e-motorbikes causes significant concern within our communities and poses a risk to pedestrians, other road users and the riders themselves.

“The Falmouth and Helston Neighbourhood Team will continue to take robust action against the illegal use of Surron style electric motorbikes, off-road motorcycles and other nuisance vehicles. Riders found committing offences may have their vehicle seized and could face prosecution, fines, penalty points and driving disqualification.

“Please help us to identify offenders and if you witness a bike being used illegally please report it via the Devon & Cornwall Police website. Every report helps us build intelligence, identify repeat offenders and direct patrols to where they are needed most.”
