Police investigating series of arsons in Penzance

Police in Penzance are investigating following a series of arsons in the town.

Officers have received reports of a number of bin fires recently, with several having taken place around the train and bus station area.

The fires are believed to have been started deliberately, by suspects setting alight cardboard left outside at night.

One of the fires took place in the early hours of Monday 8 December at The Savoy Cinema on Causewayhead.

We received a call from the fire service reporting the fire which had been started by rubbish bins and cardboard at the front of the cinema being set alight.

Extensive damage was caused to the front of the building.

Neighbourhood Team Leader Sergeant John Scrimgeour said: “We are aware of and are investigating a number of fires being set in bins around Penzance.

“We will be increasing our presence in the town and are already following various lines of enquiry to identify those responsible.

“Setting any fire in a public place creates a huge risk and can easily result in fatalities should it spread.

“Anybody with any relevant CCTV or information about the fire at The Savoy, or any of the others around Penzance is asked to get in touch with us via 101 or our website quoting 50250313613”
