Illegal e-bike and suspected drugs seized
Over the weekend an illegal e-bike, suspected drugs and a large amount of cash were seized in Newton Abbot.
Officers working as part of Operation Leapstring were back in action in the town with the South Devon Neighbourhood Support Team and Newton Abbot Neighbourhood Police Team targeting the illegal use of e-bikes and e-scooters.
Officers spotted a man riding an e-bike near the quay end of the cycle track and, when they approached, the man made off. However, with the help of nearby plain-clothes officers further down the track the bike rider was detained and subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply.
Sergeant Matt Gill explained: “A search uncovered a large quantity of cash and other drug related items. Following this, an address was searched and officers also discovered suspected drugs.
“Sometimes what starts as a simple stop for an illegal e-bike results in further discoveries. If you’re using an illegal e-bike or e-scooter, don’t assume we’re only interested in the bike.”
Privately owned e-scooters are not allowed to be ridden in public spaces, including public roads and pavements.
E-bikes and e-scooters being used illegally will be seized by police may be crushed.
