Plymouth Police and members of the public recognised with awards for service, dedication, and bravery

Police Officers and members of the public were honoured this week during an awards ceremony held by Chief Superintendent Matt Longman of Devon and Cornwall Police.

Twenty-four officers and 7 members of the public were recognised at a ceremony at Plymouth Guildhall on Wednesday 29 March, to celebrate their commitment, professionalism, quick thinking and often life-saving actions.

In addition to police and members of the public receiving awards, the event saw the Lord Mayor and Consort in attendance.

Members of the public receiving commendations included two local men, Lee Fox and Liam Philips.

Their citation read: On the 5th of September 2022 a call was made into the Police Control Room reporting that there was a male stood on a bridge within Devon and Cornwall.

This male appeared to be in crisis, experiencing confusion and anxiety. He soon started indicating that he wanted to end his life and felt helpless.

Liam Phillips and Lee Fox were in the area at the time and noticed this individual in need of help.  Without any hesitation they both intervened and took control of this this male, saving his life.  Both Liam and Lee kept hold of the male and offered his reassurance until Police Officers arrived at the scene. The extraordinary selfless act that evening by Liam and Lee saved this person’s life and gave him hope. We would like to commend Liam and Lee for demonstrating courage. The critical action that they took was appreciated not only by the individual but also his wider family and friends.

One of the several officers receiving a commendation was PC Antony Howard.

His citation read: In the early hours of 26 June 2022, police officers on patrol were informed of a fire in a nearby multi-occupancy residential building. PC Howard was first on the scene and without hesitation, he entered the building to raise the alarm and check for injured or trapped people. He instinctively went door to door while the fire continued to spread.

Due to his brave and selfless actions, everyone was evacuated and there were no injuries to the residents or PC Howard, who remained on duty after assessment by the fire brigade.

Members of public and police officers were commended for their combined response to an incident in January 2022.

Chief Superintendent Longman said: "I am exceptionally proud as the Plymouth Basic Command Unit commander, to present these awards this afternoon, recognising some truly courageous and professional policing and community support. I'd like to thank all of the winners and families and friends supporting them. Holding these award ceremonies are always a stark reminder of the day-to-day threats faced, bravery and compassion shown not only by our officers on the front line but by the residents of our City. I’d like to thank the Lord Mayor for joining us today at the Guildhall as we recognised some of the exemplar work of the police and the civic duty shown by members of the public.”
