Two men who carried out a brutal broad daylight attack using metal bars and a taser in front of horrified onlookers have been jailed.

Nikita Trembath, 32, of Permarin Road, Penryn, and Matthew Cunningham, 41, of Hilgrove Road, Newquay, appeared for sentence at Truro Crown Court for sentence on Friday 5 December.

Trembath had previously pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and possession of a weapon for the discharge of a noxious liquid/gas/electrical incapacitation device.

Cunningham had admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon at an earlier hearing.

Cunningham was jailed for five years and four months and Trembath two years and eight months. A 10 year restraining order was also put in place.

The court heard how at around 3.45pm on Tuesday 15 July 2025 police received numerous calls from members of the public reporting two men attacking a man and a woman outside the Seven Stars pub in Penryn.

Callers reported a variety of weapons being used including metal bars, a bottle and a taster. Punches and kicks were also landed on the victims while they lay on the ground.

Officers attended and located the victims injured in the street. They were taken to hospital to be treated for their injuries. The male victim suffered facial bruising and a fractured nose, and the female a head injury which required stitches.

Trembath and Cunningham were located at Trembath’s home that evening and arrested.

During a search of the property officers found an electric stun gun.

During interview, Trembath admitted much of the violence, but said it only ‘kicked off’ after aggression by the victims as he walked past with his daughter.

Officer in the case, DC Richard Haycock said: “This was an incredibly violent and persistent attack, carried out with weapons, which took place in the middle of a Cornish street at the time of the school run.

“It was no doubt terrifying for all those who had the misfortune of being in the area at the time going about their business.

“These types of incidents remain rare in our community and we hope the sentence sends out the message that such violence will not be tolerated and has no place on our streets.”
