UPDATE | Fatal collision near Coverack

Police have named a man who died following a collision near Coverack on Wednesday 2 April.

John Tripconey, 88, from the Coverack area, sustained serious injuries in a collision involving a motorbike, which happened on an unclassified road at Trevothen, between Coverack and Penhallick on The Lizard, at around 4.25pm on Wednesday 2 April.

He was taken to hospital where he died on Thursday 3 April.

The family of Mr Tripconey have paid tribute to him.

They said: “John Tripconey. Our Dad and our hero who we loved with all our hearts. Words cannot express our sadness of the loss of this outstanding man.

“John Austin Tripconey, ’Acker’ tragically lost his life on 3 April 2025. 

“He was a loving dad, grandfather, brother, uncle and a friend to so many, who devoted his life to the land and to God. 

“He was the most kind, gentle, strong and hardworking family man.

“John often shared treasured memories of the two years he spent while on National Service in Cyprus with The Royal Green Jackets. 

“He also spent 27 years as a member of the cliff rescue team based in both Coverack and Porthoustock.

“He was a great community man involved with Coverack Carnival, Christmas Tree and Ponsongath Chapel and many other organisations.

“Always putting others before himself, he was married for 52 years to his loving wife Maureen.

“John leaves children: Jayne-Marie, Lavinia, John, James, Michael and Clare. And grandchildren - Mollie, Jacob, Joshua, Emily and George.”

Officers continue to make enquiries to establish the circumstances of the collision.

A man in his 60s from Porthleven has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving, using a motor vehicle in a public place without third party insurance and driving a vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit.

He has been released on bail, pending further enquiries.
