Devon & Cornwall Police have successfully arrested and charged a man from Penzance for a number of shoplifting offences, securing a seventy-three-week prison sentence.

Freddie Clow, aged 26, of no fixed abode, was sentenced on Tuesday 13 May at Truro Crown Court. He was charged with theft from shops in April, where he stole over £300 worth of goods from the retailer Boots.

PC Stewart, who worked on the investigation, said: “I’m pleased we were able to secure this conviction and sentence. Clow has been a prolific offender who repeatedly targeted shops without any consideration of the impact his behaviour would have on employees or the local businesses he was stealing from.

“I hope this sends a clear message, especially to those local businesses whose livelihoods are heavily impacted by retail theft, that your reports are being heard and your information is being acted on.”

The conviction is part of the Penzance police team’s approach to targeting prolific shoplifters. Officers regularly visit local businesses to form positive relationships, encourage reporting and build intelligence regarding repeat offenders.

In addition to working with retailers, police regularly link in with local organisations to address the long-term issues surrounding shoplifting in an effort to deter people from offending in the future.

Police also carry out intelligence-led foot patrols during peak times, patrolling areas where crime has happened or is likely to happen.
