This Hate Crime Awareness Week, Devon & Cornwall Police are encouraging organisations and businesses to pledge that they do not and will not tolerate hate crime in any form.

Hate Crime Awareness Week is a national week of action to encourage communities affected by hate crime, local authorities, police forces and other key partners to work together to tackle local hate crime issues.

Zero Tolerance to Hate Crime is a pledge that organisations can make to show that they support everyone in their local community to feel safe and respected.

The Zero Tolerance to Hate Crime campaign was first launched in 2016.

Inspector Rebecca Le Cheminant, who leads the Force’s Diverse Community Teams, said: “Devon & Cornwall Police take all hate crime seriously. This pledge is as important now as it was when it was first launched. It has a clear message –targeting someone through hostility or prejudice because of who they are is unacceptable.

“We have teams dedicated to supporting victims of hate crime and our Diverse Communities Teams are committed to working with groups across Devon, Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly to send out a strong message that hate crime will not be tolerated. My hope is that people will display their pledge for others to see and know that the organisation is a safe space for them.”

A hate crime is defined as 'Any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a person's race or perceived race; religion or perceived religion; sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation; disability or perceived disability and any crime motivated by hostility or prejudice against a person who is transgender or perceived to be transgender.'
