Devon & Cornwall Police Introduces Taser 10
Members of the public across Devon and Cornwall may begin to notice officers carrying a new Taser device as Devon & Cornwall Police starts the introduction of Taser 10.
The new device is being rolled out initially to armed officers, with wider implementation planned in the future.
Taser remains a less-lethal option that can be used by specially trained officers in situations where there is a risk of violence and where its use is necessary, proportionate and lawful.
Superintendent Ian Thompson, Operational Taser Lead for the force said:
"Members of the public may notice some officers carrying a device that looks slightly different from the Taser they are used to seeing. While Taser 10 represents the latest generation of the technology, it is best thought of as an evolution rather than an entirely new device.
Much like a mobile phone update that builds on and improves existing technology, Taser 10 takes the proven capabilities of the previous model and incorporates a range of enhancements designed to improve performance, effectiveness and accountability.
One of the most significant improvements is its increased range of up to 45 feet. Creating greater distance between an officer and a subject provides more time and space to communicate, de-escalate situations and resolve incidents safely wherever possible.
Taser 10 is also capable of deploying up to 10 probes, giving officers multiple opportunities to achieve an effective deployment if one is required. It incorporates a more visible green laser, improving visibility and aiming in daylight conditions, and enhanced data recording that begins from the moment the device is drawn from its holster. This will further support transparency, accountability and learning following any use of force incident.
Alongside these key developments there are a number of other improvements that enhance the overall capability of the device.
Importantly, what has not changed is our approach to governance, training and scrutiny. Officers receive extensive specialist training before being licensed to carry Taser and that training is regularly refreshed and assessed. Every use of Taser is subject to review and oversight.
I'm confident that when our officers use Taser it is necessary, proportionate and ethical. The introduction of Taser 10 provides them with improved technology while maintaining the robust safeguards and accountability that the public rightly expects."
Taser is used in a small proportion of police incidents, and in many cases, its presence alone can help bring a situation to a safe conclusion without it needing to be discharged.
The introduction of Taser 10 forms part of ongoing national improvements in officer safety equipment, supporting officers in protecting the public, resolving conflict safely and reducing the risk of injury to everyone involved.
